Preparing for a wedding is a joyful and meaningful time. The information you share here helps the pastor understand your hopes for the ceremony and begins the planning process.

In the United Methodist Church, Christian marriage is a covenant—an act of worship in which two people promise to love, honor, and cherish one another in the presence of God and the gathered community.

What the Church Provides

A pastor to officiate the ceremony (pending direct confirmation of date and availability)
Use of the sanctuary or chapel (if requested and available)
A worship-centered liturgy in the United Methodist tradition
Guidance on shaping Scripture readings, vows, and service elements
Support for rehearsal planning
Basic sound system use (if technician is available)

Additional fees may apply for musicians, custodial services, livestreaming, and use of extra facilities.

What the Couple Provides

Direct communication with the pastor to confirm date and time
Obtaining marriage licenses from civil authorities
Coordinating music and any applicable musician fees
Choosing readers and ceremony participants
Providing unity elements (candles, sand, etc.), if desired
Any decorations beyond the church’s standard furnishings
Photography or videography arrangements
Notifying the pastor promptly of any changes in plans

Premarital counseling is not required unless you request it. The pastor is happy to offer it if desired.

Church Affiliation & Fees

Couples who are members of Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church, who attend regularly, or whose parents are active participants in and supportive of the life of the congregation are not typically asked to pay fees for the pastor’s services or the use of the sanctuary.

For couples who are not affiliated with the church in these ways, there may be fees for the pastor’s time, building use, custodial services, musicians, or other wedding-related needs. These details will be discussed directly once the pastor has reviewed your information and confirmed availability.

Weddings at Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church – Music and Fees

Unless other arrangements are made in advance with the Pastor, the church’s current organist will serve as the primary musician for all weddings held at PUMC. Once your wedding date is set and confirmed, the church organist will be contacted on your behalf.

Because music needs can vary, the organist will contact you directly to discuss musical selections and associated fees. The organist is contracted directly by you, and payment should be made directly to them. Do not make checks payable to the church.

The Pastor and church office will determine whether you are considered a current member or affiliate of Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church.
