Preparing for Baptism
Below is the information we ask families to provide when preparing for baptism in the United Methodist Church. Before you begin entering details, here are a few helpful things about the commitment you are making on behalf of your child.
Three Channels of Grace
The liturgy and theology of United Methodist baptism are grounded in the idea of channels of grace—the ways God works in our lives.
1. The Family
The family is the primary place where God’s grace is nurtured. Parents/guardians renounce, profess, and promise to model Christian faith for their child.
2. The Community
Baptism is always celebrated in community. The congregation professes its faith, renews its vows, and promises to surround your child with support, prayer, and example.
3. God
At its heart, baptism is a mystery of divine grace. God is already at work in each person—even from the earliest moments of life—seeking healing, relationship, and wholeness.
Godparents
Godparents today serve as symbolic partners in your child’s spiritual life. They should be baptized Christians who intend to support your child in faith.
When Baptisms Occur
Because the community is essential to baptism, services are held during Sunday morning worship.
